About the College
The Municipal Establishment “Nizhyn Maria Zankovetska Applied College of Culture and Arts”, by Chernihiv Oblast Council, is one of the leading institutions of professional pre-higher artistic education in the Chernihiv region, providing training for highly qualified specialists in the fields of culture and the arts.
The history of the institution dates back to August 23, 1908, when a commercial school was established in the city of Nizhyn by decision of the Nizhyn Society for the Promotion of Commercial Education. Initially, the institution trained specialists in the field of economics, combining professional training with a solid general education.
Throughout its existence, the institution has repeatedly changed its name and educational profile, responding to social challenges and the needs of the time. The key stages of its development include:
· Commercial School (1908–1918);
· Commercial School (1918–1919);
· Socio-Economic School and Technical College (1920–1922);
· Transport Technical College (1922–1923);
· Trade and Industrial School (1923–1924);
· Cooperative Vocational School (1924–1930);
· Technical College of Soviet Construction and Law (1930–1932);
· Technical College of Communist Education (1932–1934);
· Library Technical College (1934–1941);
· Political Education School (1943–1947);
· Technical College for Training Cultural and Educational Workers (1947–1961);
· Cultural and Educational College (1961–1990);
· College of Culture (1990–1999);
· College of Culture and Arts (1999–2000).
In 2000, the institution was named after the outstanding Ukrainian actress Maria Zankovetska, marking a significant step in shaping its artistic identity.
In 2017, the institution was reorganised into a college, and since 2020, it has been operating as a professional pre-higher education institution in accordance with the modern education system of Ukraine.
The College provides training for students in the following educational and professional programmes:
· “Organisation of Socio-Cultural Activities”;
· “Performing Arts”;
· “Library, Information and Archival Studies”;
· “Decorative Arts and Crafts”.
Throughout its more than a century-long history, the establishment has trained thousands of specialists who have made a significant contribution to the development of culture, arts, education, and the socio-cultural sphere of Ukraine.
Graduates include People’s Artists of Ukraine, Honored Artists of Ukraine, Honored Workers of Culture of Ukraine, masters of folk art, Excellence in Education of Ukraine awardees, scholars, heads of cultural institutions, directors, choreographers, teachers of art schools, librarians, cultural managers, as well as public and civic figures.
The educational process is aimed at developing professional competencies, creative thinking, and practical skills necessary for successful work in the spheres of culture, arts, education, and creative industries.
The College has strong traditions of artistic education, combining classical approaches with innovative teaching methods. Special attention is paid to practical training, participation in competitions, festivals, creative projects, and cooperation with employers.
The establishment plays an important role in the cultural life of the region, contributing to the preservation of national cultural heritage and the development of contemporary art.
